2018 Bollywood Flashback: Did The Reign Of The Khans Tumble Down This Year?
Yes, you hear it right. If you look back and see, the reign of the three Khans of Bollywood- Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan did indeed tumble this year. Zero, Race 3 and Thugs Of Hindostan, all of them failed to mark their niche in the hearts of the public and instead actors like Ayushmann Khurrana (Andhadhun, Badhaai Ho), Rajkummar Rao (Stree) and Vicky Kaushal (Raazi, Sanju) ruled the roost.
Ayushmann Khurrana, Rajkummar Rao and Vicky Kaushal have delivered splendid content driven films which struck the with the audience inspite of still having a growing star power. And what else proof do you need when it was clearly seen what a tough competition they gave to the Khans this year and emerged victorious in the process.
And why would we disagree? If you look back and see what is common between Zero, Thugs Of Hindostan and Race 3, it will definitely be a larger than life trailer which arouses your expectation and when you see the final result, you see a half baked lousy plotline.
Well, it is the era of 'Content Is King'. The Khans need to comprehend the psychology and demands of the audience. Like except for the hard core Salman 'Bhai' fans, who else could tolerate the mockery which Race 3 was. Coming to SRK, even though that outstretched arms and dimpled cheeks must have ruled a lot of hearts in days of yonder, now he must break free of that stereotyped romantic hero image and try to attempt more realistic roles, this is one of the prime reasons for the failure of Dilwale, Jab Harry Met Sejal and the recent Zero. That is also another reason why his brief stint in the film Dear Zindagi as Jehangir Khan struck chord with the audience, because it was realistic. Coming to Aamir Khan, he played a huge risk with Thugs Of Hindostan. But again the lack of realism and the overdose of fantastical theme did not strike a chord with the audience.
Well, every era of Bollywood is dynamic and is constantly changing. The psyche of the audience is also changing wherein except for the die hard fans of SRK, Salman and Aamir, all the other masses are inclining towards the content being delivered by the young and fresh talents of Bollywood. This is the main reason why even the experimentation by the  Khans like SRK's Fan or the recent Zero or Aamir's Thug Of Hindostan fails to attract the audience.
Having said that, nobody is denying the star power, the stardom and the popularity of the Khans are fading. The honest and genuine fans who truly idolize them will honestly want them to be back in the game by truly delivering meaningful cinema instead of some illogical caricatures.
If there are some things Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan need to imbibe, it is that there is no harm in trying out realistic stories or playing second fiddle to female protagonists or just accepting their aging gracefully in the films. At a concluding note, it can be derived that the Khans should not take for granted their mass appeal when it comes to delivering true content. We have immense love and respect for the trio- Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan so inevitably we still want them to deliver meaningful and worthy cinema to prevent their reign from faltering. Do you agree with us?
