Akshay Kumar Breaks His Silence on 2024 Box-Office Flops: "It’s Not Like This Has Happened for the First Time."

Akshay Kumar Breaks His Silence on 2024 Box-Office Flops:
After a dry spell at the box office last year, Akshay Kumar is now gearing up for his first release of 2025 with Sky Force. Akshay, a superstar who has been a part of Hindi cinema for over three decades, has been stuck in a loop of flop films for the past few years. While his Bollywood counterparts like Shah Rukh Khan and Sunny Deol minted millions at the box office with their comeback films — Pathaan and Gadar 2 — Akshay, unfortunately, failed to achieve the same feat.

Khiladi Kumar, the OG action hero of Bollywood who rose to stardom in the 1990s with a string of superhit action movies, had a disastrous run in 2024 with big-budget releases such as Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Sarfira, and Khel Khel Mein, all of which fell flat at the box office. The only exception from his 2024 lineup was Stree 2, where Kumar made a special cameo in the Shraddha Kapoor-starrer horror-comedy.

Akshay will next be seen in Sky Force, an aerial actioner directed by Sandeep Kewlani and Abhishek Kapur. The trailer of Sky Force was unveiled on Sunday in Mumbai in the presence of the media. During a media interaction at the trailer launch, Akshay was asked about his disappointing run in 2024 and his outlook for 2025, given his exciting lineup of films.

Hailed as one of the busiest actors in Bollywood, Akshay has been working on back-to-back projects despite facing repeated failures at the box office. The OMG 2 actor finally opened up about his disappointing year in 2024 and how he plans to move forward.

Acknowledging that 2024 was a bad year for him, the actor emphasized his commitment to hard work. He said, “It’s not like this has happened for the first time. The best thing to do is to keep working hard. I keep telling myself this and talk about it with others too: you have to keep working hard. Lots of people come and tell me to do a maximum of two films a year. But if I can work more, why shouldn’t I?”

Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan and Sarfira, his two big releases in 2024, failed to enthrall audiences. However, Akshay revealed at the Sky Force trailer launch that he remains proud of Sarfira. He said, “My entire career has been built on this pace, dedication, and hard work. I have also been told not to take up content-driven films, but I don’t want to follow that advice. Even though the film didn’t work, I am very proud of making a film like Sarfira. It is one of my best films.”

An aerial actioner, Sky Force stars Akshay Kumar alongside debutant Veer Pahariya. The cast also includes Sara Ali Khan and Nimrat Kaur. Produced by Dinesh Vijan, Jyoti Deshpande, and Amar Kaushik, Sky Force is set to release in theaters on January 24, 2025.

On the work front, Akshay Kumar has several exciting projects in the pipeline, including Jolly LLB 3, Welcome to the Jungle, Housefull 5, Hera Pheri 3, and Bhoot Bangla.
