3/5 Stars
When you hear, that there is a 'unique' love story brewing somewhere, it immediately gets you hooked up. The film, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga preaches this 'unique' love story and strives to deliver the message of acceptance to the ways of heart. The story could have been a yet another preachy subject but the film deals with this sensitive concept in a very endearing way. The film is truly a fresh take on homosexuality. Fortunately the fresh concept and a realistic approach to the story makes up for a dull screenplay.

The film begins with a typical love at first sight for Sahil Mirza (Rajkummar Rao). He unexpectedly turns the knight in shining armor for the timid but innocent Sweety (Sonam Kapoor). He falls head over heels in love with her and travels all the way to her residence in Moga, Punjab to confess his love for her. There are some profound traces of old school romance on the first half. Sweety's family is conservative but endearing and close knitted comprising of her doting father Balbir (Anil Kapoor) who is a garment business owner by profession but a chef by heart, her hot headed Veerji (Abhishek Duhan) and her free spirited Beeji (Madhumalti Kapoor). But the film tends to drag along some lousy elements which shift the focus to Sweety's 'reality.' The story sets in motion when she confesses that she is in love with a girl, Kuhu (Regina Cassandra).

The second half throws light in the turmoil and tribulations in the life of the girl for not being 'normal'. The film draws in an emotional appeal when a parent accepts the true reality of his daughter and ends her burden of fighting with her 'disease.' The film may be over dramatic in parts but its message is conveyed loud and clear. The film executes its message in an endearing way which is the main highlight of the story.

Some of the intense performances come from Rajkummar Rao, Anil Kapoor and Juhi Chawla. Sonam Kapoor displays an honest effort in portraying the inner turmoils of Sweety but in some scenes, she can be seen clearly trying to hard. But it is the realistic performances of Anil Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao along with the very free spirited Juhi Chawla which make the characterization of the film truly vulnerable to watch. One of the most fun moments in the film is the flirtatious romance between Anil Kapoor and Juhi Chawla. The supporting cast like Madhumalti Kapoor, Seema Pahwa, Abhishek Duhan, Brijendra  Kala and Regina Cassandra fully justify their respective characters.

The direction by Shelly Chopra Dhar and the writing by Gazal Dhaliwal execute the message of the film in a convincing manner. The film attempts to communicate how homosexuality needs to be accepted and embraced from the conservative elder sections of the society but most importantly to embrace the pure essence and emotion of love as the film preaches the subject of 'Let Love Be.' Watch this one to witness a fresh take on a love story with some refreshing performances.
