Nayanthara vs. Dhanush: All You Need to Know About the Clash Between Two South Superstars
Nayanthara and Dhanush, two superstars of South Indian cinema who once shared great camaraderie on and off the screen, are now locked in a public feud. Here's why.

The war between the two stalwarts erupted over a three-second clip from Nayanthara's Netflix documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairy Tale. The recently released documentary offers a glimpse into the Lady Superstar’s personal and professional life, shedding light on her exceptional journey to stardom.

For the unversed, Nayanthara called out Dhanush in an open letter, criticizing the Raanjhanaa star for withholding the NOC (No Objection Certificate) required for her documentary. Since the much-talked-about documentary chronicles Nayanthara's illustrious career and delves into the woman behind the Lady Superstar, it includes behind-the-scenes footage from her films, celebrity interviews, and insights from her family and close friends.

The controversy centers around a behind-the-scenes (BTS) clip from the 2015 Tamil movie Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, which starred Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi. The movie, a hit romantic comedy, was written and directed by Nayanthara's husband, filmmaker Vignesh Shivan, and produced by Dhanush under his banner Wunderbar Films.

After Netflix released the trailer for the documentary, Dhanush reportedly sent a legal notice demanding Rs. 10 crore for the unauthorized use of the three-second BTS clip.

In her defense, Nayanthara took to Instagram on November 16, posting a scathing three-page open letter. She claimed that despite multiple attempts to seek Dhanush's approval for the footage, he declined permission, forcing her team to settle for the current version of the documentary.

In the now-viral letter, Nayanthara stated that many well-wishers from the film fraternity contributed to the documentary, which captures her life, love, and marriage. However, she lamented the exclusion of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, calling it "the most special and important film."

Nayanthara also accused Dhanush of overreacting, pointing out that the disputed three-second footage was shot on a personal device. "We were startled to read your claims over a mere three seconds of BTS footage that was already publicly available on social media. Sending a Rs.10 crore notice for this is unacceptable," she wrote.

She further criticized Dhanush’s character, stating, "This is an all-time low for you and speaks volumes about your character. I wish you were half the person you portray on stage at audio launches in front of your fans. Clearly, you do not practice what you preach."

Nayanthara also revealed that Dhanush had said "horrible things" about Naanum Rowdy Dhaan after its success and continues to exhibit "vile behavior while wearing a mask in front of the world."

She added, "I learned through industry circles that your ego was hurt after the film became a blockbuster. Your displeasure was evident even during award functions connected to this film, such as Filmfare 2016."

Urging the Maari actor to watch the documentary, Nayanthara concluded, "It is important to #SpreadLove. I hope someday you practice what you preach and truly embrace positivity."
In support of his wife, Vignesh Shivan shared a throwback video of Dhanush speaking about positivity and living without hate. The video, taken during the 2017 audio launch of the Tamil film Sakka Podu Podu Raja, shows Dhanush saying in Tamil, "The love we have for one should not turn into hate for another. Live and let live. Celebrate others’ success or move on."

Meanwhile, Dhanush has yet to respond to Nayanthara’s open letter, leaving fans of both stars in a frenzy.
Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale is currently streaming on Netflix in English, Tamil, and Malayalam.
