Veer Pahariya on Portraying Squadron Leader Devayya in Sky Force: ‘I Held My Directors and Cried'
Posted on 15 Jan, 2025

Ajjamada Boppayya Devayya, a name synonymous with bravery, remains a legendary figure in the history of the Indian Air Force. Known for his rebellious spirit and unflinching courage, Squadron Leader Devayya’s story is one of unmatched patriotism and valor.
The upcoming film Sky Force, set to release on January 24, 2025, brings his extraordinary life to the big screen. Directed by Abhishek Anil Kapur and Sandeep Kewlani, the film stars Akshay Kumar and introduces Veer Pahariya in the pivotal role of Squadron Leader Devayya.
To prepare for the role, Veer immersed himself in studying the 1965 Indo-Pak war and the life of Devayya. He also met the late officer’s family, including his 90-year-old wife, Sundari Devayya, and their daughters, Smitha and Preetha. “When you play a role like this one, the first emotion you feel is intimidation. I was intimidated by the magnitude of what I had before me. There’s so much written about him, but to [portray] him on the screen is a challenge. I told myself that if I put my head down and gave it my all, I would be able to crack it. I knew that if I did well, this film had the potential to inspire a whole generation of young people to join the armed forces,” Veer shared.
The actor’s preparation extended beyond books and interviews. He visited Air Force bases across Lohegaon, Suratgarh, Delhi, Pathankot, and Gwalior to engage with fighter pilots. “There’s little written about him in history books, so his family helped me bring him to life on screen. He loved photography, was a great golfer, and was rebellious. We added those elements into the film. It was the emotional prep that was [challenging] too—understanding a man who was leading a life driven by passion, and one who made India his priority,” he explained. Veer also worked closely with acting coaches to perfect his portrayal.
The climax scene of the film posed a unique challenge for Veer. “I am in the cockpit, and my entire face is covered. It gives you a glimpse of how fearless the character is. I could only portray [Devayya’s] vulnerability, courage, and passion through my eyes. When I finished the scenes, I held my directors and cried for the man and the sacrifice he made,” Veer said, reflecting on the emotional weight of the role.
During the Indo-Pak War of 1965, Squadron Leader Devayya undertook a daring mission to attack Pakistan’s heavily guarded Sargodha airbase. Amidst the intensity of the operation, he faced a formidable adversary—a Pakistani F-104 Starfighter, one of the fastest jets of its time. True to his call sign “Wings of Fire,” Devayya refused to retreat, exemplifying unmatched bravery.
The film’s trailer has already resonated with audiences, offering a glimpse into Devayya’s indomitable spirit and his critical role in the war. Sky Force promises to be a powerful tribute to the heroism of Indian Air Force officers and the unparalleled courage of Squadron Leader A B Devayya.
