Boman Irani’s Directorial Debut ‘The Mehta Boys’ Premieres at Regal Cinema, Receives Standing Ovation
Boman Irani’s cinematic journey came full circle last night as his directorial debut, The Mehta Boys, premiered at Mumbai’s iconic Regal Cinema in Colaba as part of the Kala Ghoda Festival. For Irani, this wasn’t just another screening—it was a deeply personal homecoming to the theatre where his love for cinema was first ignited.

The film, a heartfelt exploration of love and the complexities of a father-son relationship, struck a chord with the audience. As the credits rolled, the theatre erupted in applause, culminating in a standing ovation. Standing before the very screen where he once sat as a wide-eyed moviegoer, an emotional Irani took in the moment.

Addressing the audience, he expressed gratitude to his family, cast, and crew for being part of this milestone. He also paid tribute to a special figure from his childhood—Aslam, who has been projecting films at Regal Cinema for 53 years.

Reflecting on his early movie-going days, he shared, “I remember watching The Sound of Music, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Von Ryan's Express, Oh God, Agony and Ecstasy, and Kramer vs. Kramer among others multiple times. I've sat in every single seat that you all have occupied today. Today, I get to see The Mehta Boys on this very screen, in this very theatre, with all of you who are showing so much love. It makes me incredibly emotional to see my family here. Today is a special day in my life—I feel like I've come to my graduation. It’s like a childhood dream come true.”

Even before its premiere, The Mehta Boys had been making waves. Its trailer received widespread acclaim, with industry veterans like Anil Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, and Riteish Deshmukh praising Irani’s storytelling and direction. The film also gained international recognition, premiering at the Indian Film Festival (IFFI) in Berlin.

Directed by Boman Irani and starring him alongside Avinash Tiwary, Shreya Chaudhry, and Puja Sarup, The Mehta Boys is set to premiere on February 7th on Amazon Prime Video.
