Every story has a hero and a villain, but some stories only have villains. The spiritual sequel to the 2014 thriller Ek Villain takes place 8 years after the first film where another serial killer is on the loose. However this time it's twice as brutal and gruesome as he finds his match.

Strong pursuits of the film

Soundtrack

The soundtrack was set to be its biggest strength and it lives up to it. Ankit Tiwari, Tanishk Bagchi, and Kaushik-Guddu are the composers of Ek Villain Returns' original soundtrack. Manoj Muntashir, Kunaal Vermaa, Tanishk Bagchi, and Prince Dubey penned the lyrics for this venture while Raju Singh composed the background score for the film.

Ek Villain Returns' music is a blend of melancholy and motivation and the tracks appear to be a band-aid on wounds. Almost as if the character is healing through the chaos.Ankit Tiwari, Raghav Chaitanya, Tara Sutaria, and Altamash Faridi lend their voices for this OST. "Galliyan Returns" creates nostalgia and sinks into the new screenplay with ease.

Offbeat Characterization

It is clear as the day that Ek villain returns on the surface presents a grand idea of revenge, double cross, and brutality. The characters, therefore, are set to be a cut above the average Joe serial killers. The writing unit of this venture doesn't want the characters to fit into boxes of black and white, right or wrong. They were going for a morally grey premise, even when it isn't always reflective, Nonetheless it needs to be acknowledged.

Cinematography and overall direction of the film

Some shots rather than making sense were only added for cinematic value. Nonetheless, Vikas Sivaraman does a fine job in creating a grim world devoid of vibrancy. Mohit Suri and his team set up the premise for an intriguing tale. To give the two pairs two different tracks and to blend that seamlessly into the play is evident. It is a stylish thriller no doubt.

Weaker links of the film

Plot structure

The movie focuses more on the shock value than on the actual story. The structure is weak, it is hindered by back and forth storyline and unnecessary plot twists. The dialogues are a hit and miss. Even when the story tries to engage you with its narrative, there seems a disconnect with the characters. Piecing the puzzle of Ek Villain Returns becomes a task.

Establishment of the premise

The potential of this movie was way more than what we got. Mohit Suri in his earlier works has made sure to cement the fictional world with a good base, however this time despite the clear intention he missed by a mile a good Massey thriller.

Final thoughts: Watch or skip?

Watch this movie for its music and technical prowess. It's not a easy watch but if you are fan of stylish thrillers that don't require much thought, go for it.
